Justice in Action Design and Engagement

OUR MISSION

At Jade Lab, we design for justice.

Jade Lab partners with nonprofits and communities to design for justice by building capacity, shifting power, and shaping systems through equity-centered research, consulting, and policy development.

Our Services

  • We build community capacity by equipping residents, grassroots leaders, and partner organizations with accessible, culturally grounded knowledge about the science and environmental justice issues affecting their neighborhoods. Through clear and intentional science communication, we translate complex systems and technical data into usable information that supports advocacy, decision-making, and collective power.

Our background in civil, environmental, and systems engineering equips us to develop user-friendly tools, facilitate learning sessions, and create communication materials that honor community expertise while broadening access to data and research. By strengthening community understanding and agency, we help ensure that those most impacted by environmental and social challenges can meaningfully shape the decisions that affect their lives.

  • Root cause and systems analysis helps organizations move beyond surface-level problems to understand the deeper structures, patterns, and histories that shape inequitable outcomes. Rather than focusing on individual symptoms, we examine the policies, incentives, power dynamics, cultural norms, and resource flows that create and sustain the issues communities experience.

Using tools like causal mapping, systems modeling, and pattern analysis, we identify leverage points—places in the system where targeted action can create meaningful, lasting change. This approach supports organizations in designing strategies that address problems at their source, align with community realities, and promote long-term equity and resilience.

  • We develop frameworks and strategies that help organizations clarify their goals, align their values with action, and make decisions that advance equity and justice.

Our approach blends systems thinking, behavioral design, and community co-creation to create tools that are both rigorous and practical.

Whether supporting policy development, organizational planning, or program design, we help teams articulate what matters, map the pathways to get there, and define strategies that are feasible, measurable, and grounded in lived experience. The result is a clear, actionable roadmap that strengthens internal capacity and guides long-term, sustainable change.
